Foxconn, Flextronics face transit troubles in Trump closes Mexican border
President Donald Trump appears to moderated his threats to close the border with Mexico, though he also stated "security is more important to me than trade". Much of the short-term risk to supply chains from slower trucking is focused on the agricultural and automotive supply chains, though these only represent 19.8% of Mexico’s $279.9 billion of truckborne exports to the U.S. in the 12 months to Feb. 28.
The electronics industry also faces significant risks, particularly given the rapid product cycles and just-in-time supply chain strategies used. Mexican exports of computers by truck - led by Foxconn, Wistron, Inventec and IBM - reached $26.0 billion in the past 12 months. That followed an increased of 23.4% year over year in the three months to Feb. 28.
Shipments of telecoms equipment worth $11.5 billion were led by Flextronics and Jabil Circuit. Exports of medical devices, which are arguably more sensitive in terms of delivery reliability requirements, were worth $7.3 billion and included shipments by Johnson & Johnson and Cardinal Health.
