USMCA Steel controversy news by Hebei Longsheng
USMCA Watch: Controversy builds as structural steel elevated The U.S. government has received a petition to reviewing alleged dumping of fabricated structural steel – used in construction – from China, Canada and Mexico. The products were already covered by 25% duties applied against Chinese exports in August, but were not captured by the section 232 review of the steel industry. The case could prove controversial given steel duties are one issue holding up ratification of the U.S.-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA) in all three countries. Shipments from Mexico to the U.S. have been growing the fastest with a 26.1% jump in 4Q compared to a year earlier. Suppliers from outside China and USMCA may also have an opportunity to expand. Shipments from Germany and Taiwan are already 57.8% and 30.4% higher year over year in 4Q respectively. |
