G20 watch: The Xi-Trump meet is only 1 of 6 issues to watch The G20 Summit could feature development in six areas relating to global trade. (1) There may be no formal statement from the group regarding trade protectionism, even though global trade growth has slowed to 2.3% year over year in September. (2) The long-awaited meeting between President Xi Jinping and President Donald Trump is unlikely to lead to a removal of U.S. tariffs on Chinese exports. Indeed, duties applied by the U.S. in July and August have led to a reduction of just 16.5% year over year in imports of tariff-afflicted products from China in September. China’s retaliation meanwhile has resulted in a 60.3% slump in U.S. exports. If anything the 10% duties applied to Chinese imports in September may be increased to 25% in the new year. |
