USMCA Watch: Fiat-Chrysler recommits to Mexico as exports reach a record
The U.S. automakers are beginning to confirm their long-term supply chain plans following the resolution of the U.S.-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA, aka NAFTA). Fiat-Chrysler will continue production of its Ram light truck in Mexico, CEO Mike Manley has indicated, in order to maintain its market share of the North American market. That reverses a plan to end Mexican production that was announced in 2017.

So far Fiat-Chrysler has not made any radical changes while negotiations continued. Its exports from Mexico reached $7.22 billion in the 12 months to August 31. While they reached a record high in August, growth in the month of September was a more pedestrian 10.8%. The importance of the U.S. to Fiat-Chrysler’s Mexican operations can be seen in the 76.2% share of exports that go to the U.S., similar to GM’s 77.8% but below Ford’s 89.1%.
